Advice to parents on how they can assist their child with the process of finding a summer internship.

 

 

 

STEP 1:

 

ON YOUR MARK: 

What your child needs to do before the process begins. 

  1. Choose an appropriate professional wardrobe.
  2. Determine the career focus –  Self Assessment   (Choice of career and of industry.)                                               
  3. Become knowledgeable of transportation and LI geography.

    1. Resume -  “What can I do for your company!"
    2. Cover letter
    3. Telephone Skills
    4. How to Ace the Interview
    5. Use the Internet to research corporations
    6. Thank you letter.

 

 

 

STEP 2:

 

GET READY:    Build a Career Strategy. 

  1. Internships need to support/enhance the college major.  
  2. Timeline – the process begins in September.

September – December

Build Employment Tool Kit
Check Wardrobe
Review your career focus.
 Attend on campus workshops and internship fairs.

January:

LI Works Internship Fair

Identify corporations and mail 20 letters of interest.

 

March/Spring Break:
Follow-up on letters.  Call 20 companies.

Arrange for interviews. 

Goal is to obtain summer internship by April 15th.

May:

Identify new companies.

Contact by phone, email and letters.

  1. Assist in identifying Corporations within Industries

Internship websites.

Corporate websites.
