Career
Plan Part 1
Building Your Academic
Foundation

|
Every activity your child
participates in will assist in making sound career decisions. The
number and diverse experiences your child has lays the foundation for
career success. Discuss the following questions with your child:
- Does your child's class schedule include courses from
the traditional areas (such as English, Math, Science, etc.) as
well as numerous courses from the Career and Technology
Major: Technology, Business, Arts, and Family Consumer and
Science area? Each child should take at least three to five units of
credit from the Career and Technology education area.
- What experiences has your child had related to
teamwork and leadership? Does your child belong to one of our
125 clubs?
- What special passion or interest does your child
possess? What activities is he/she excited about?
On the left are links to the list of high school courses
and the actual career plan your child will be completing. Please

include: job tasks, necessary interests and abilities, education
preparation, salary, and professional associations.

Career Plan Part 4
Post
Secondary Education and Training

|
At this time your child should
have a focus on one or more career fields that would be appealing and
appropriate.
Your child will now conduct research on the courses
needed for successful completion of a college major. The research
will include college (one, two and four year programs), trade schools and
the armed services.
Discuss with your child your feelings about pursuing
further education on or off Long Island. There is a time chart and
a college evaluation form that you will find interesting.
What is the most important factor in choosing a college? Geography,
college major, cost, size, sports? How about, who will hire your
child after college graduation? The college career center may be the
most important factor you should evaluate before choosing the college!
Feedback: Please share your thoughts and or
discussions by e-mailing the instructor(s).
All correspondence will be kept confidential.

Career Plan Part 5
Who
Will Hire Me?

|
The last two steps your child
will undertake in this career planning process is (1) to become aware of
the employment tools
For example, if your child has chosen the career of
accounting through the stages of self-assessment, career research,
shadowing and post-secondary exploration, it is now time to discover which
industry would he/she like to be employed as an accountant, and who will hire your
child upon high school or college graduation.
Discuss with your child their corporate findings.
Salary is always a good dinner topic. How much must an individual
earn in order to live on Long Island?
Feedback: Please share your thoughts and or
discussions by e-mailing the instructor(s).
All correspondence will be kept confidential.
