After completing your self-assessment and career research activities, you are now ready to shadow an individual who is in your chosen occupation.  Here are some links to help you find an individual to shadow:

STEP ONE: Shadowing Resume Prepare your resume.  You will need to send your resume with your letter of introduction. Make sure your resume states that 'You want to obtain a shadowing opportunity in the (name) career.
STEP TWO: Local Networking Ask friends, teachers, and relatives.  Check our school's alumni database at http://alumni.smithtown.k12.ny.us
STEP THREE: Telephone Book Use your local Yellow Book or Superpages from Verizon.
STEP FOUR: Business Organizations There are many local business organizations which publish their membership list on the Internet:

STEP FIVE: On-line Newspapers
STEP SIX: Colleges We may find your shadowing contact at our local colleges.  Go to our College Connect page to find a professor to shadow.
STEP SEVEN: Professional Associations LI has many professional associations with on-line membership listings.
STEP EIGHT: Other local Resources
STEP NINE: National Contacts
STEP TEN: Introduction/Contact letter
  • Create a list of 5 - 10 companies.  
  • Create and send an introduction letter.  You must address the letter to an individual.  You may have to call the company to get a name. 
  • Wait 3 days and then call employer.
